What's ahead in 2019?

Happy New Year and welcome to another (by now) 358 days full of opportunities, challenges, hurdles and decision making!

Whilst it is the time when everyone predicts the future and the trends impacting the year ahead, this won't be about that. The future is a 'side effect' of what happens now and the decisions we make.

It isn't all that glam and sexy to be in the now compared to being in the future but fact is, that the future doesn't need to be - the future is already here; it is being created now by every action we take (or not).

In this first newsletter of 2019, I will share some trends we have been seeing that are already happening now in the world (of work) and in our economy.

The ones I will share already impact the way we live, work, act and interact and  will continue to shape our world in 2019 and also give some insights into what you can expect from impaCCCt this year as we have some great changes coming!

More high tech requires more high touch

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is upon us and by the number you can tell it's not the first time that things change, jobs are shifting and the future of work is going through a massive shape up.

Whilst most talk about how many jobs will be replaced by AI and technology, not many actually take (rather than talk) actions what to do about it and how to use this change to our advantage.

Hardly any companies and their HR teams or team leaders have actually taken pro-active action to up-skill and/or re-skill their teams which is why it is so important (read: crucial) for you to do it yourself!

It's now the best time to get ahead and not just prepare yourself for the future of work but actually create your own opportunities by being aware of what those changes mean to you, your industry, your profession and your life.

Will technology replace jobs?

It sure will! And those findings are backed by a ton of research like by those from the World Economic Forum (who I always use as trusted source of information).

But knowing that means nothing. It's the doing that makes all the difference!

Interesting fact:
75 million current job roles may be displaced by the shift in the division of labour between humans, machines and algorithms, while 133 million new job roles may emerge at the same time.

Now this is more than just an interesting fact - it is a compass for us to disrupt ourselves before we get disrupted.
Anxiety and fear only comes from not knowing what's next so the best way to predict the future is to create it. The first step to making any change is to become aware of it (which is already most often the hardest part).

So here is your challenge:

📝Write down all your current tasks you perform in your role (just get them onto paper).
🔎Now rate them how much you like them.
💡Lastly, mark those that can be replaced by technology and see what's left.

👉🏼How many of those tasks that are left do you love doing?
👉🏼How many of those are you excelling at doing?
👉🏼How many of those tasks can you focus on and master to become the best in it?
👉🏼What value is it that you bring to others so they would pay money for it?

Now this is how you can create a career that's not just aligned with your strengths and interests but also prepares you for disruptions before they happen and through taking actions, you can not only future-proof yourself but actually take control over your own destiny and on your terms :)

It's not the first time that things change. And it won't be the last time either.
Change is painful but so is growth. However, nothing is as painful as staying stuck where you don't belong and regretting to not having acted earlier when you had the chance (but were to scared to actually go for it).

In fact, people are more scared to lose what they have to get what they really want that they do not do anything about it.

Change means the opportunity to grow, do and be better and to get one step closer to becoming the person we want to be if we embrace it.

What we do know for a fact is that we all need to be life-long learners and can't rely on someone else to show and tell us the path to take as
a) it could be too late and reacting is too late
b) we continue to live someone else's life and/or
c) we regret that fear has gotten the better of us and we don't make the impact we were meant to make although we had the chance.
